Writers Grooming Writers

Fine writers should split hairs together, and sit side by side, like friendly apes, to pick the fleas from each other's prose. -- Logan Pearsall Smith

What happens when an open, egalitarian group of very different individuals gathers
regularly around a library table to share its literary products? Pickin' Fleas, utilizing
the new and revolutionary process of on-demand (POD) publishing, is one result.
What are the Writers Digest guidelines for writers' groups, and how well did they fit
the experience of this group in Athens, Ohio? They tell you, and more.

Quoting in part from their own review of the work:
"The book defies easy categorization. We meet the writers and observe how the
egalitarian approach works in such a project....The quality of the work is uneven, even
within each writer's section. Surprisingly, the effect is inspiring rather than off-putting.
The work resonates with a mutually respectful, grassroots ethic, and the new on-demand
publishing technology makes it all possible...."

FROM ROBERT PINSKY:
"That writers help one another with attention, encouragement, criticism, is part of the
distinct vitality of writing as an art in the United States. In a way that academic programs
alone, or mass publishing alone, cannot, undertakings like this one contribute significantly
to American culture."
--Robert Pinsky, Poet Laureate of the United States 1997-2000
