It is one of our goals, as parents and educators, that our children become good readers. It has been shown that children who are frequently read to develop a better understanding of the workings of printed material and become increasingly more familiar with it. Thus, children who are read to often have a better opportunity to become successful readers when the time comes.
We, as Morrison kindergarten teachers, would like to provide you with an outline and incentive for consistently reading to your child. Our program, "Raising Bookworms" is designed to do just that. If you are interested in helping your child become a better reader, all you need to do is two things. First, you, or another responsible member of your family, might try to read to your child for 10 - 15 minutes a day. If you like, you may read for longer periods of time, but we have found that 10 - 15 minutes a day is very adequate. Second, twice a month we will give you a note in which to record the total time read to your child for that period of time. Please send that note back to school so that we can keep track of the total time "read" by your child.
When your child reaches the 10, 20,
or 30 hour mark, he/she will receive
10 hours = The student's name will be posted in the hallway, and he/she will
receive a special bookmark.
20 hours = We will arrange for a picture to be taken here at school of your child
along with whomever has been reading to him/her. That picture will be
placed in the hallway.
30 hours = Your child will receive a Principal's Award from Mr. Gordon at a
reception we will have in the spring.
The "Raising Bookworms" program can be a lot of fun for both your child and for the other readers involved! We have received many positive comments about it in the past, and we hope you enjoy it as well. As always, thank you for your support in your child's education, and enjoy this quality time with your child.
