CELEBRATION TIME 1999
It is Celebration Time for the
Ohio Association of Senior Centers (OASC).
OASC is Proud to announce that
the Association is celebrating the 40th
anniversary of its founding during 1999. OASC has
the distinction of being the "oldest"
Senior Center State Association in the United
States. OASC will receive recognition for its
accomplishments at the National Conference on
Aging Conference to be held in April 1999 in San
Diego, California. The Ohio celebration will take
place on Monday, April 26, 1999 during OASC's Annual Spring Conference being
held at Deer Creek State Park.
Through the efforts of Muriel
Bertsch, a senior center director from the
Cincinnati area, the Association was founded in
1959. Today, OASC has members in each of Ohio's
eighty-eight counties and represents more than
one-quarter million older adults.
OASC's mission is "to
strengthen and unite the senior center network in
Ohio by providing opportunities for professional
development and leadership in addressing advocacy
issues." This non-profit group is supported
through memberships, professional training, a
professional certification system and resource
guides as a part of user friendly product
development. OASC represents senior centers
throughout the state that target their services
to those older adults in economic and social
need. OASC has advocated for Ohio's senior center
network since its inception and believes that
senior centers are the approriate agencies for
designation as community focal points for the
delivery of maximum services to older adults.
OASC emphasizes that senior centers are the
infrastructure that serve as the foundation for
building a continual system of community-based
long-term care services for Ohio's aging
population.
The Association sponsors an
annual professional conference and offers
workshops and training opportunites throughout
the year. In addition, OASC has established a
three-tiered senior center staff certification program
that to date has certified more than 150 senior
center staff members throughout the state of
Ohio. The certification program works closely
with campus-based gerontology training programs
in Ohio to offer learning experiences both on and
off campus. Plans are underway to offer online
course work in the future.
OSAC will soon publish the second
edition of the popular
Resource Guide for Senior Centers (1997), a
comprehensive guide for senior center operations.
Each year, OASC presents the
pestigious Muriel Bertsch Award
to recognize an individual in Ohio who
exemplifies excellence in the senior center
network.
A board of trustees govern OASC.
The board structure includes working committees on public
policy, marketing, communications, certification
and professional development. OASC publishes a
quarterly newsletter for its membership.
