Upcoming Special Events

Modern public library service in Athens dates back to 1905 when the Carnegie Library was established at Ohio University to serve both the university and the village of Athens.

The university library later moved to what is now Chubb Hall and contained a "City Section" for non-university Athens residents.

The creation of a county public library system in 1935 led to the establishment of an Athens branch library on West Union Street.

The library later moved to West Washington Street and then to North Court Street. Athens Public Library moved to its present location at 30 Home Street in the spring of 1993.

The Friends of the Athens Public Library was founded in 1979 and incorporated in 1980 as an educational nonprofit corporation.
