The Soldiers Relief Commission was started over one hundred years ago (1865) to assist Union soldiers and their families in times of need. Now we are called the Veterans Service Commission and have a wider range of responsibilities. However, our primary purpose still is to help veterans and their families, particularly in times of financial need. The Athens County Veterans Service office is not a branch of the Veterans Administration. We do not approve or deny VA claims. However, the Veterans Service Office does assist veterans and their dependents in applying for and maintaining their VA benefits.
The Veterans Service Commission assists eligible veterans and their dependents who have met with unexpected hardship until a more permanent solution can be found.
Additionally, we offer assistance to eligible veterans for needed medical care. We supply the bronze flag holders that mark the graves of veterans buried in our county. We also help veterans seek assistance from other state and federal agencies.
The Veterans Service Commission stops accepting relief applications at 12:00 noon on the scheduled day of their meeting.
