Other Federal Benefits
Various benefits are available to veterans or their families that are not
administered by the VA. The following is a brief list:
- Reemployment Rights: If you lest a full time job and you served
less than six years in the service after 8/1/61, you had the right to your
old job with seniority. If you have been denied this right, contact the
U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).
- Unemployment Compensation (after service): The amount and time
for this benefit varies. Apply at the local state unemployment bureau
(BUC).
- Employment Assistance: This is available at the local state
employment bureau (OBES). They have a local veterans employment rep
(LVER) who specializes in placement of vets. Some offices also have a
disabled veterans outreach rep (DVOR) who can specialize in jobs for the
handicapped vet.
- Jobs Training Partnership Act: JTPA is a national training
program for disabled, Vietnam, and recently separated veterans. See OBES
office.
- Federal Employment and Preference: Veterans may receive helpful
advantage in federal employment such as additional points being added to
passing scores in job examinations, waivers of certain physical
requirements, first consideration for certain jobs, and preferences for
retention in layoffs.
