Power and Duties of the Mayor
Mayor Abel's daily life involves meeting with city department heads, making public appearances, working with the local media and businesses, overseeing the expansion of the city, plus many more duties the public never sees. Everything he does as Mayor works towards a better life for all of Athens' citizens.
Mayor Abel works with Athens City Council to bring new laws into effect, helping the local businesses and citizens to live and work better. Mayor Ric Abel represents the Executive Branch of the Athens City government.

Ric Abel has served in Athens government for over 14 years, first as an at-large council member for 8 years, then as President for the following 6 years. He became Mayor of Athens in 1996, winning a landslide election. Having received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Ohio University, he has been active within the Athens community since returning from military service. Ric is also a founding and still active member of the Housing for Athens Senior Residents Board of Directors. Ric is an Athens High School graduate.
Mayor Ric Abel has been voted Best City Official the last three years in a row by the readers of The Athens News.
