Underground Railroad Research & Documentation Center of Southeastern Ohio Mr. Henry Robert BURKE is the principal investigator, recordkeeper and promoter of African-American local history research. The focus is on anti-slavery activities in SEO, underground railroad, escaped slaves, emancipated slaves who came to settle in the area. Mr. Burke is a frequent lecturer to local historical societies, church groups, and schools. Recently he has written and been written about (his research) in the _Marietta Times_. This paper has run a series titled " Being Black in the Valley" (March 7, 9, 10, 11, 1994). Another story by Ms. Connie Cartwell of the staff of MT wrote a piece: "Roads to Washington County: Early Accounts of African Americans Sketchy, Historians Find". (March 7, 1994 B4) based on research carried out by Mr. Burke. Mr. BURKE has written a series of monographs dealing with local history and spurred the interest of the local public library's historical & genealogical collection staff into making inquiries into the African-American heritage of Washington County and the Old Northwest Territory.
