John N. Templeton (1804?-1851)

I have been working on a biography of John N. TEMPLETON (1804?-1851). John Newton Templeton graduated from Ohio University in 1828, among the first 10 African American college graduates in this country.

Among his activities in the Steel City:

• a founder of the African Public School
• associate of Martin Robinson DELANEY on the Mystery  (African American Newspaper)
• active in local convention mouvement, member
• member of the Wylie African Methodist Espiscopal Church (now Bethel)
• member United Bretheren of Mutual Relief with J.B. VASHON
• an officer of the Pittsburgh Anti-Slavery Society (Manager/1840).

NB. Not to be confused with his younger brother, Benjamin Franklin TEMPLETON.  Benjamin Franklin Templeton graduated from Lane Theological Seminary in 1838.
