Some feeble attempts were made to hinder their settlement; but the intelligent and law abiding citizens of this community discountenanced such a course, and the Negroes were permitted peacefully to occupy the lands purchased for them in this county, with the money provided by their late master. Henry R. Burke burkeh@mcnet.marietta.edu Michel, Your information regarding William Ragland and his slaves was very interesting. In going through my census material on blacks of Jackson County I came across some material that might be tied to these former slaves of Ragland. In 1860 the following group of blacks living in Jackson County, Liberty Township, Ohio spelled their name as Raglan: Name Age Birth place John Raglan 33 VA Fanny Raglan 26 VA Daniel Raglan 33 VA Patsey Raglan 32 VA William J. Raglan 4 OH Lucy A. Raglan 3 OH Benjamin F. Raglan 1 OH Juda Raglan 75 VA George Raglan 37 VA Fenner Raglan 46 VA Melissa Raglan 12 VA Eliza Raglan 10 VA George M. Raglan 7 VA Frank Ragan 85 VA Patrick Raglan 21 VA If you know what county William Ragland filed his will, we could obtain a copy of the will and check to see if any of the above names were in the will.
