Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) Visit to Athens in 1959 MLK came to participate in the 18th Ecumenical Student Conference on the Christian World Mission, held in Athens, December 27, 1959-Jan. 2, 1960. His address titled " The Church on the Frontier of Racial Tension", was delivered on December 30th, 1959 in the Alumni Memorial Auditorium (now called Templeton-Blackburn). The National Student Christian Federation (NSCF) was affiliated with the World Student Christian Federation, a forerunner of the World Council of Churches. Ohio University provided dorm spaces and meeting rooms for the participants.
