Reedsville was laid out about 1855 by Major Reed. He was a native of Washington County, N.Y., a soldier in the War of 1812, was a prominent resident of Olive Township for many years. He came to Washington county, Ohio in 1809, and after the war of 1812 lived for a time at Belpre, where he married Miss Salvina Barstow in 1815, coming to what is now Olive Township the next year. Major Reed served as justice of the peace of this township for 51 consecutive years, was county commissioner for ten years and held other offices. He also found time to devote to surveying as well as farming and died in 1879 at the age of 89 years, leaving many descendants.
