The Athens County
Arbor Day Committee
We are a group of individuals and organizations working to increase public
awareness regarding the value of trees to the beauty of the community; to provide
opportunities for public participation in tree planting programs for community
beautification, land reclamation, and resource development; and to reduce tree abuse and
promote conservation, protection, and stewardship of our tree resources.
The Athens County Arbor Day Committee was officially inaugurated in 1989
by dedicated community members and local organizations. To date, the Committee is proud to
have contributed to Athens County in the following ways:
The sponsorship of the 1989 Holiday on Court Street Ecumenical Display
The planting of over 170,000 seedling trees in honor of 1990 Earth Day
The planting of trees in urban areas and parks
The creation of an Athens City Tree Commission
The revitalization of the Johnny Appleseed Memorial Highway
Education and training in the areas of tree care, preservation, and
planting.
