CHAUNCEY MAYOR UNEXPIRED TERM
Three Questions
What do you propose to do to get adequate law
enforcement in Chauncey?
Mattey:
I feel law enforcement is a big issue to all residents of the village. However, I feel there is a need to ensure the right candidate is chosen. The village has had numerous issues with the police department in the past. A thorough search is needed to find a marshal that will work for the village to enforce the laws and ordinances.
Mirza:
Having law enforcement in Chauncey is a requirement, not a luxury. I have been trying to have a police officer for Chauncey and will keep on trying to get one. The village council has so far stonewalled but I will succeed one day. It is not an excuse that we cannot afford it. We just have to budget properly and we can have a police force.
What do you think can be done to
get flood insurance protection back for Chauncey residents?
Mattey:
Working with FEMA to ensure that all is done to restore the program to the village is a priority. The future administration needs to make an effort to bring structures into compliance to reinstate the FEMA program.
Mirza:
For many years, chauncey officials paid no attention to the requirements of FEMA to keep the flood insurance program. We were put on probation more than a year ago but paid no attention. It will take a great deal of work to get back on the program, but it can be done. If I am re-elected Mayor, I will try hard to get the flood insurance program back to Chauncey. We have flood plain ordinances but have no law enforcement to enforce these rules. We will have to have a police force in Chauncey if are serious in getting back to the FEMA flood insurance program.
What ideas do you have for
re-organizing Chauncey village government?
Mattey:
I do not feel the government needs re-organization.
Mirza:
Chauncey has had many problems. They stem from the structure of the village council and a lack of legal advice on matters like conflict of interest, etc. A recent State Audit was very critical of a complete lack of control over handling of village money. It points to mismanagement of money resulting in a loss of thousands of dollars of tax payers money. I have been the Mayor for only some months and I have started to put together a system of controls. We are already seeing some good results and if I am re-elected, I will continue to streamline money handling with adequate checks and balances.
