What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

A Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as brain damage from some externally inflicted trauma to the head that results in significant impairment to an individual's physical, psychosocial, and/or cognitive functional abilities. It is characterized by altered consciousness (coma and /or posttrauma amnesia) during the acute phase after injury, the duration of which varies greatly among individuals, usually on the severity of the injury.
