Athens County Children Services has always been committed to children remaining with family members whenever possible when they cannot stay with their parents. Now, there is a kinship caseworker, a position committed to only helping kinship caregivers. In general, this caseworker provides information and support for relatives or close friends who are parenting children who for one reason or another are not living with their parents. This caseworker can also help to link them to needed support services, such as preventive health care, legal assistance, counseling, parenting referrals, child care, respite, financial assistance, or other needed services. One group of families served are those who have agreed to raise the children of their own child, sibling or friend when Athens County Children Services has custody. The other families the kinship caseworker serves are families who have accepted the child of family member or close friend in a private arrangement, without the intervention or involvement of ACCS.
