AAMUG History

The Mac interest started in 1984 when Issy Urieli, a professor of mechanical engineering, saw the advantages of the Macintosh and wanted a Mac lab for his students. In cahoots with Richard Post, then Assistant Director of the University Computing and Learning Services, they negotiated a deal with Apple . . . saving the university $30,000 in the bargain. No one that I've talked to is quite certain how the Mac Users Group formed. The guess is that it started evolving around 1985 around the common interest in the Mac. John McVicker, Doug Mann, Tim Myer, and Richard Dean were the main force behind the group. Perhaps McVicker is the real glue that has held it together since the late 1980's. Bob Church, the founding President of the Apple II group, joined the Mac Users Group and has also been a strong supporter.

Today AaMUG is a diverse group of individuals from business, design, engineering, fine arts, teaching, and farming. . . all dedicated Macintosh users. Computer knowledge and computer competency ranges from a professor of computer science to beginners. When we come together it is to share knowledge, to review the latest software by member demonstrations, and to discuss current computer hardware and software problems.
