Houdini

Houdini stuffed into a glass
(His audience transfixed, aghast!)
Could hold his breath in practiced gasp
And feel the weight his handcuffs cast.

Upturned beneath an iron cap
And plunged into a liquid trap,
Houdini dropped between the gap
To make his bond of chains unwrap.

What secret thoughts did he conceive
When held in timelessness believe
He must escape this mortal weave
Or leave his faithful wife to grieve?

What fears propelled him to succeed?
What did he learn from padlocked sleeve?
What mystic gifts did he receive
That helped him struggle to be freed?

And when at last he stood unchained,
What lessons from his act remained?
Did the crowd's applause seem strange
To a soul by magic changed?
