Setting Up Your Web Browser with Telnet

For some links on SEORF, you will need to have a telnet application configured to run from your web browser. Modern browsers will do this automatically. For older browsers, you may have to follow the directions below that correspond to the browser you are using. When Netscape connects to a telnet site, it needs to use additional telnet software (a "helper application") to do so. You can recognize telnet sites because their addresses, listed in the Netscape Location window, start with telnet://.

For Netscape 4.x

From the Netscape Edit menu, select Preferences.
In the Category window, click Navigator, then Applications.
In the Description window, scroll down and click URL: Telnet Protocol.
Click the Edit button.

In the Application window, enter the full path for your telnet application.

Thanks to the Univeristy of Toronto Libraries for the above instructions!

The Library of the Univerisity of Illinois at Urbana / Champaign has a very nice tutorial for configuring telnet applications on older Macintosh and Windows computers that use Netscape browsers.

Here is a list of telnet applications to use with Netscape Navigator. Please note that SEORF does not provide support for or is responsible for the use of these applications. Any problems which result from the use of these applications is the responsibility of the user and the manufacturer of the software per license aggreement. First, look to see if you already have a telnet application on your computer. Just search for the word, telnet. Windows 95 and later versions have telnet (telnet.exe) in the c:\windows directory.
