The Kiwanis Club of Downtown Athens sponsors an annual Wrestling
Tournament for the Athens Youth Wrestling Club each winter, traditionally on the last Sunday of January, or on the first or second Sunday in February. The Wrestling Club formed in 1994, and the tournaments have been held every year, starting in 1997. The Tournament Director from 1997 has been John Deno.
Our thanks to the sponsors, club members, and friends, without whom the Tournament would not be possible.

Other Information
-
- The Athens Youth Wrestling Club is not funded by the school system, and must pay for the program through donations and sponsorships. Meals and lodging expenses for the high school and middle school wrestling programs on away tournaments are often the responsibility of the wrestlers and their parents. Scholastic Wrestling is a sport in which kids do not have to be a certain size or shape to succeed, because the children compete against others of the same age and weight. Wrestling builds personal character and teaches kids that success requires work and dedication.
-
- The admission charges pay for only part of the costs of the tournament. Much of the support for the tournament comes from sponsors, whose names appear on the tournament program and on a wall poster displayed at the tournament. The costs of putting on the tournament include:
- The total cost of the trophies and participation awards for each of the 50-plus weight classes exceeds $1,550.
- The six referees are paid $100 each, for a total of $600.
- Mailing, copying, and other communication costs total around $300.
- Facility and equipment costs total around $200.
The members of the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Athens donate much of the labor and of the food for the concessions stand.
If, as we hope, the donations from sponsors plus the cash receipts from admissions and the concessions stand exceeds the costs of the tournament, those "profits" will be split between the Athens Wrestling program and future Kiwanis-sponsored youth events. All Kiwanis Club administrative expenses are paid directly by the members, so that 100 % of funds raised through the tournament will be used for service projects, such as the Smart Start Kits that we provide to all kindergarten students in Athens County public schools.
