Cast of Characters for Little Women
NOTE: The indicated ages are guidelines, not absolutes.
Male Roles –
Laurie Laurence – (Age: Mid teens-20s) Laurie is the boy next door. He comes from a wealthy family and lives with his grandfather, since both of his parents died in Europe, where Laurie was born. Laurie becomes Jo’s best friend; like Jo, he is spirited and stubborn, but he also is a bit silly, like Amy.
John Brooke – (Age: 20s-30s) John Brooke is Laurie’s tutor who falls in love with Meg. John is kind, intelligent, scholarly, and slightly shy. Being poor, John is slow to show Meg his true feelings because he is afraid he cannot offer her the lifestyle she deserves.
Grandfather Laurence – (Age: 60s-80s) Grandfather Laurence, Laurie’s grandfather, comes across as being cold and uncaring, but in reality is just the opposite. Grandfather especially takes a liking to Beth, who reminds him of his own daughter.
Father March – (Age: 40s-60s) Father March is serving as a chaplain in the Civil War through most of the play; he returns at the end of the play after an injury. He is generous and kind, but, as Aunt March points out, not always wise with money. Father March is committed to social justice and civic virtue.
Female Roles –
Jo March – (Age: Late teens-20s) Jo is the heroine of the play. She is a spirited, stubborn, sometimes outlandish tomboy with ambitions to become a famous writer. Jo is talented and often writes theatricals for her sisters. Jo has a strong urge to care for her family, especially financially, and always wants to be in their company. L.M. Alcott describes Jo as having “a quick temper, sharp tongue, and restless spirit that were always getting her into scrapes, and her life was a series of ups and downs, which were both comic and pathetic.”
Meg March – (Age: Late teens-20s) Meg is Jo’s refined, beautiful older sister. Meg’s dream is to marry someone she loves and to have a family with him. Meg enjoys spending time with her sisters, and often takes the lead role in the plays that Jo writes for her family.
Beth March – (Age: Mid teens-20s) Beth, the third March sister, is nicknamed “Little Tranquility” because of her kind, meek, and patient nature. While Jo dreams of being a famous writer, Amy dreams of being an artist and a married woman, and Meg dreams of having her own family, Beth is content to stay at home and take care of the family. Beth is home-schooled because of her timidity, and is child-like.
Amy March – (Age: Mid teens-20s) Amy, the youngest March sister, is fun-loving and frivolous. Amy longs to be wealthy and refined, and is very concerned with being beautiful. Amy is a talented artist, and dreams of pursuing a career in art while marrying a rich man.
Marmee – (Age: 40s-60s) Marmee is the wise, loving, kind, and generous mother of the four little women. She is gracious and logical, and always seems to know what to do in tough situations.
Aunt March – (Age: 50s-80s) Aunt March, who deep down is a good person, is grouchy and grumpy. Her favorite activities seem to be complaining and judging others. Deep down, she means well, but she comes across as mean and cranky.
Hannah – (Any age) Hannah is the servant of the March family. Hannah has been with the family for years, and is often considered part of the family. Hannah is kind and comical, and may have an Irish accent.
