RE: Monthly GIS Progress Report
Commissioners:
Sanborn Colorado completed our aerial photography flight mission.
The City of Athens bid the East State Street widening project.
Our driveway reconstruction is part of the project. Design of
our addition project is now being finalized and we will proceed
to the bidding phase about June 1, 2002. We are relocating our
gas and electric lines. AEP has installed new poles in front of
our office. Soon they will relocate their service pole out of the
way of our addition. Construction of our project should begin
about August 1, 2002 and be completed July 1, 2004.
JB and Darren spent a day with Steve Tomicisin, GIS Coordinator
at Greene County. Greene County has applications very similar to
Athens County, runs the same software, and is ahead of us in the
GIS application learning curve. So the visit was very helpful in
refining our application development. ESRI came in for a
technical session at ILGARD further assisting our efforts in
GIS development.
Attached are two status reports on our Orthophoto project.
Project Status Report No. 4
Project Status Report No. 5
Also attached (paper copy only) are maps prepared by the
Health Department regarding their ongoing GIS work.
We had a GIS Steering Committee meeting:
David Crecelius, Cynthia Crecelius, and Darlene Magold of ODNR
presented the GIS work they are doing in floodplain management.
ILGARD is 99% complete with the data conversion line work.
Ken is assisting with PINs and parcel split records.
Attributing and splits work is progressing.
Will Cominsky from Rural Action reported that they are beginning
GIS development and have been receiving data from ILGARD.
Athens City is using ArcExplorer in departments to get data to
the employees that need it. Ron restated his preference for a
central data warehouse concept at our County GIS facility once
our addition is built. He sees the potential benefits of a data
sharing cooperative where all participating agencies maintain
their most current data in central data warehouse for use by all
other cooperative participants, as well as publishing the shared
datasets with ArcIMS on the Internet. The City is using GIS for
work on the Wellhead Protection Plan, East State Street widening
project, and their bikepath extension.
Jill remains excited to implement GIS applications in her office
and is preparing her staff for using GIS. She plans to place a
public access terminal in Ken's office to provide easy public
access at the Court Street level.
The Wayne National Forest office hosted our meeting and
Aaron Burk gave a tour of their new facility.
They have a nice GIS office area staffed with three people.
Our next GIS Steering Committee meeting will be held May 16, 2002
at the new ILGARD Facility conference room. The new ILGARD
facility is in the building furthest west in the line of main
buildings (Building #22). The conference room number is 214 and
is located directly across the hall as you exit the elevator on
the second floor. Some parking is available in front of the
building but technically all parking at the Ridges requires a
visitor's pass. Visitor's passes are available at ILGARD.
Thank you for allowing me to coordinate this important aspect
of Athens County's future.
