GIS work accomplished in 2006:
The City of Athens contracted with ILGARD to host their GIS
similar to our County agreement with ILGARD, and partnered with
Athens County to purchase bulk annual ESRI software maintenance.
Planning continued to bring a GPS based real-time emergency
vehicle location capability to enhance our already excellent
E-911 operation. New radios and frequencies are operational,
and the old County Engineer frequency will be used as the vehicle
locater data transmission channel. A Pilot Project is planned
with SEOEMS and the Athens County Engineer as partners to
demonstrate this new technology.
The County Engineer's Office implemented projects completed under
contract with the Ohio University Cartography Center that scanned
and cataloged old road survey maps, and property maps.
This created a valuable archive from the rapidly deteriorating
paper maps. The next project is underway to place these maps on
our County Engineer Operations and GIS websites.
The Engineer's Office continued a project to locate countywide
Section Corner Monuments by Global Positioning methods.
We continued the process of migrating our GIS to a geo-database
and plan conversion to a SDE (Spatial Data Engine) Enterprise
enabled system next year.
The State of Ohio Office of Information Technology,
Ohio Geographically Referenced Information Program (OGRIP)
has released an RFP for the acquisition of seamless statewide
imagery for the Southern counties during the spring of 2007.
The statewide orthophotography project will acquire 1-foot pixel
resolution natural color digital orthophotography data for the
entire state, and Athens County will receive the new data in
2008.
The Athens County Comprehensive Plan update got underway.
Part of this project includes mapping and the maps will be
produced by ILGARD.
Ohio University worked on developing a campus-wide handicapped
accessibility map and using GPS to locate new lines being placed
on campus.
The Auditor's Office is now maintaining all property splits
directly to the main database.
We are working to have all operating GIS databases from all
agencies in the County eventually operating from our Enterprise
System on our County server and software. We have several
available excellent data layers that may be displayed, printed,
or downloaded from the AthenGIS.com website. Seeing is believing
-anyone who wants to know what we have accomplished or what is
available needs only to "click" in.
