Subject: Zanesville Slave & Rescue Case (May 3, 1859) Participants: Joshua Mc.Carter SIMPSON, William JACKSON, James Jackson, Ezekiel T. Cox, etc. ....been researching the events surrounding the capture of a fugitive slave William Jackson (resident of Barnesville, lured into Zanesville) and his subsequent return to Clarksburg, Va. via Wheeling. William Jackson was a slave, property of James Jackson of Clarksburg. WJ had escaped to Belmont Co., OH three years earlier. A "mob" of African-American citizens set out to rescue him at the station. Reuben Johnson, an African-American who led the aborted rescue operation was arrested by the authorities in Zanesville. He was later tried and sentenced by the US Circuit Court in Cincinnati. He was found guilty of interfering with the enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act. His sentence was to pay $5.00 and spend 30 days in the county jail. This research started because J. Mc.C. SIMPSON was involved with this affair. At least as interesting as the Oberlin-Wellington affray .....
